What is Church Government (Polity)?

Church

- assembly of people 'called out'

Elder ('presbyteros')

- man of advanced age
- term of RANK or OFFICE

Bishop/overseer
('episkopos')

- guardian, superintendent, elder
- man charged with the DUTY of things being done right by others

Deacon ('diakonos')

- server, waiter
- executes commands of another

Pastor ('poimõn')

- Shepherd

Teacher ('didaskalos')

- explains the things of God
- shows the way to salvation

Qualifications:

 

ELDER

- above reproach, husband of one wife, children controlled, man

BISHOP/
OVERSEER

- above reproach, husband of one wife, children controlled, man

DEACON

- above reproach, husband of one wife, children controlled, man

3 Forms of Church Government:

Presbyterian

- hierarchical
- election by assembly

Elder

- governs assembly

Episcopal

- hierarchical
- election by bishops

Bishop

- governs assembly

Congregational

- independent
- election/govern by assembly, except
ordination of pastors
